Overview
This is an opportunity to get in on a lovely little river for just two rods with bigger fish. The Holkna is a beautiful river now privately leased. It is located in the north-east of the country with famous rivers all around it. It is in the Salmon hotspot of the north. The river is 49 kilometres long, but only 12km is fishable before the fish arrive at an impassable set of falls. There are lovely open pools on the lower beats of the river, but the uppers beats climb into the more canyon-like waters.
The owners have built one and will build a second, very lovely cabin overlooking the river. Each has room for a small family with the idea that this is a place to have to yourselves and enjoy yourself with the family. It is a two-rod river with really good-sized salmon and is entirely private – you will have the whole place to yourselves. It may need some time to allow catch and release to take effect, but if you wait for it to get good, there will not be any space left! It really is idyllic.
Holkna is a top river and to have a whole river to yourself with such nice accommodation is pretty special and unique to Iceland.

Fishing
immerse yourself in wild Iceland
The Holkna is perfect for those who like to use small double-handed rods or even switch rods. We recommend taking our 13ft rods out with you and a spare 12ft. The smaller rods can bear very useful when fishing the upper beats in the canyon. We use typical Icelandic salmon flies, including small hitch flies, sunray shadows and size 14 flies.
This is about as wild a country as you can get right in the northeast corner of Iceland. The river is easily fished on the lower part but increasingly demanding physically as one progresses up the river system into the canyon.

Accommodation
Holkná Lodge is ready for those who want either self-catering purpose lodges or fully catered for. A small private lodge allows those who want to cut costs to self-cater and manage all their own food and supplies. Alternatively, we can arrange for a cook and staff to be there, allowing you to maximise your time on the river.
The lodge has 6 bedrooms at the ready; although only 2 rods can fish at any one time, the ability to rod share is ideal for those looking to cut costs. The extra rooms can be used for a chef to join the party.

Do I need a hire car?
You do not need a hire car. We can organise transfer drivers to collect you from the lodge and hotels. Although if you would like more freedom, you may hire a car. The Holkná is a versatile river, from the narrow canyons at the uppermost beats to the wide-open flood plains below, the river has it all to offer. This means you need to be well equipped for all eventualities. Having a variety of rod sizes is highly recommended. There will be times when you need to flick a small fly into a small pocket of water in the canyons; single-handed rods are perfect for this. At other times you will need to cast a longer line across the water to swing a sunray; 13 ft is ideal for this.
Layering in Iceland is important; our Nunas Hoodie and Torne wading jacket is the perfect combination for all weathers. Wind rain and sunshine can all be expected when travelling to Iceland, be prepared. The Dry Backpack 25l is ideal for keeping everything safe and carrying that extra jumper down the river.
