Overview
One of Iceland’s premier fly fishing experiences, the Nordurá features an incredible river and lodge located in the western part of this Atlantic salmon paradise.
Famous for large runs of grilse and superior numbers of two-sea-wintered fish that can reach the high teens in weight, the river is one of the longest in Iceland, meandering through lava fields and canyons and featuring numerous majestic waterfalls, crystal clear waters and simply stunning views.
Thanks to its size, the Nordurá is comfortably able to cater for 12 rods at a time, with the beautiful, fully catered lodge hosting up to 24 people on a rod-sharing basis.

Fishing
Fly fishing on the Nordurá is nothing short of exhilarating. With crystal clear waters, stunning views, and several species of incredible, powerful fish – the river has something for everyone.
Whether you enjoy fishing smaller rods in the canyons to sighted fish, or prefer casting a longer line in the meadows on a slightly wider river, there is a great variety of fishing available.
Early season on the Nordurá is June and the river gets good runs of spring fish up to the late teens. Traditionally later on in July, as the grilse runs start to arrive, we see larger numbers of fish being landed. This is an extremely popular time to go; as casting over large pods of fresh fish with small hitch flies can often be about as exciting as it gets for many fly anglers.

Accommodation
The modern, purpose-built Nordurá Lodge is a superb place for anglers to stay whilst fishing these fantastic waters, and caters for up to 24 people.
Set on the banks of the river with views over the Laxfoss (waterfall) and the ancient volcano in the distance, the lodge consists of 12 twin rooms – including en suite bathrooms – as well as substantial living and dining areas. The lodge also features a sauna, hot tub and steam room, perfect for relaxing and recharging after a long day out on the water.
The Lodge also has a wading room with boot dryers, rod racks and resident guides.

Food & Cuisine
The Nordourá Lodge features a rotation of Reykjavik’s top chefs serving a combination of regional and international dishes.
A buffet-style cooked breakfast and selection of hot and cold drinks is served every morning before anglers set out, while lunch can either be eaten back at the lodge or packed and taken out onto the water.
Dinner is served as an ever-changing set menu back at the lodge each evening, followed by drinks at the bar and a chance to share the day’s adventures with fellow anglers.

Suitable gear
The weather in Iceland can be very temperamental – especially in the early season – so having the appropriate layers is essential. The summer months (June/July) generally bring warmer weather, but we’d advise that you always have a rain jacket at the ready. Iceland does however have very little insect life, so you don’t need to worry about midges.
We’d recommend taking 9-10ft 6-8wt rods and 12-13ft 8wt rods, supported by strong, multi-purpose reels.
Integrated lines are also a must for Iceland as you will often be stripping flies. The LOOP Synchro Tactical Salmon line is a firm favourite, and will cover you for all eventualities.
Please feel free to call one of our team for advise on tackle and equipment.
