In this video LOOP team member Tim Wood shows us how to tie the Sherry Spinner pattern which is a highly effective spinner imitation dry fly.
A Spinner pattern is used to imitate the female Olives when they return to the water to lay their eggs, this normally happens in the evening with the females being trapped on the surface. Although the wings are splayed out to create the crucifix shape often associated with spinners trapped on the surface of the water, it is also common for spinners to take all sorts of shapes after they have laid their eggs, sometimes with no tails or only one wing.
This pattern is deadly in the evening when there is a good spinner fall and trout are taking advantage of this easy meal.
